2004 Kickoff

We kicked off the 2004 edition of Centre County Reads on September 25 at Mount Nittany Middle School with a demonstration of the importance—and joy—of passing on community memory from one generation to the next (see below). We also drew the winners of the Discussion Group hospitality prizes.

Community Memory Passed from Givers to Receivers

In The Giver, our book selection for 2004, 12-year-old Jonas becomes the new Receiver of Memory, learning the importance of preserving community memory from the elder Giver. At our kickoff, some of the county's own Givers told young Receivers how life has changed in central PA over the decades. We recorded the conversations, and we will have those tapes available soon in area libraries.
