How to participate
It's easy! There are only four steps, and the last two are
optional!
The first step is getting The Giver, and local libraries and
bookstores have stocked up to provide copies. And if that always
fails, you can also order online.

The most important step—read the book!
And after you've finished, think about trying other books related to
The Giver. Lois Lowry has written two books in the same world,
Gathering Blue and Messenger (at right).
We've also put together a
list of fiction and non-fiction books for adults, young adults, and
children that relate to The Giver's themes of memory and
community. For more information, see the
Related Books page.
One of the benefits of reading one book as a community is that
there are lots of people ready to discuss the book with you.
How to run a discussion group: See
our Discussion Group page for
sample discussion questions, tips on leading a discussion, and
lists of other book groups meeting in the area.
Register your group: If you already belong to a book group that will be reading
The Giver, or if you will be starting a group that will
discuss the book, tell
us about your group.
Groups that registered before September 25, 2004 had a chance to win refreshments provided by one of our
Hospitality Sponsors. Those
winners were drawn at our 2004 Kickoff event on September 25. Make
sure to sign up early for next year's events!
The Kickoff was on September 25 was a great success, with
long-time residents being Givers for young receivers.
The next big event of the 2004 program will be Lois Lowry's visit to
Centre County. Ms. Lowry will be speaking at the State College
Area High School on October 16, and later signing books.
Get all the details on the Events Page.
